The Can 70 project is a pioneering senior cooperative housing initiative in Barcelona, Spain, developed by Sostre Cívic. It is the first senior cooperative housing project on public land in Catalonia and the Spanish state. The project aims to provide a self-managed and supportive living environment for the elderly, promoting active and healthy aging. Located on Via Augusta in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, the project will feature 32 homes along with common spaces and shared services. The development model is based on collective ownership and the right to use the land, which prevents speculation and individual profit. Members contribute an initial capital amount and pay monthly installments based on the costs of acquisition, maintenance, and operation of the cooperative housing, prioritizing use value over market value. The project, designed by Pastor+Toral Arquitectes, focuses on creating networks of mutual support, shared collective spaces, and ecologically sustainable living environments. The surface right granted by Barcelona City Council allows for the use of the plots for 99 years while remaining public property. This innovative approach to housing aims to transform the traditional social model of care for the elderly and promote a more inclusive and supportive community.
