Another Europe is Possible is a UK-based civil society organisation formed in February 2016 in response to the country’s EU membership referendum. With its official launch in London that month, the group brought together a coalition of left-wing and progressive individuals and organisations. Its founding statement set out a vision to remain in the EU on a platform supporting workers’, migrants’, and human rights, distinct from those of the then-Conservative leadership and business interests. Initially focused on the ‘Remain’ campaign during the 2016 referendum, the group broadened its objectives following the Brexit vote. It began advocating for freedom of movement, voting rights, and closer UK-EU ties, as well as participating in anti-Trump activities and protests critical of Brexit processes. Its activism included the development of motions for major UK political party conferences and a nationwide tour opposing the Brexit deal under Prime Minister Theresa May. In 2019, it played a significant role in the 'Stop the Coup' protests against the prorogation of Parliament. Organisationally, Another Europe is Possible is governed by an elected national committee alongside representatives from affiliated organisations. The group is registered as a limited company, based at Housmans Bookshop in London, and employs a small paid staff, supported by volunteers. Recent activities go beyond Brexit, tackling issues such as Islamophobia and supporting migrants’ rights. The organisation also produces a podcast discussing social and political developments in the UK and Europe, reflecting its ongoing commitment to cross-border solidarity and critical engagement with Britain’s relationship to Europe.
