Einszueins Architektur is an architecture firm established in Vienna in 2006 by Katharina Bayer and Markus Zilker, with Markus Pendlmayr joining as a partner in 2018. The firm has become recognized for its focus on residential construction and urban planning, specializing in participatory, sustainable cohousing projects. Their approach emphasizes early, active involvement of residents and stakeholders in project development to foster community and collective ownership. A key milestone for the practice was the realization of "Wohnprojekt Wien," a collaborative housing project completed in 2013, providing homes for 67 adults and 34 children in Vienna’s second district. Their work often integrates renewable materials, circular design principles, and strategies for carbon-neutral building, aligning with broader ecological objectives. Over the past decade, einszueins has led or contributed to numerous notable projects, including "Gleis 21," a participatory wood-hybrid residential building with 34 units and extensive communal spaces, which garnered the Detail Award 2022. Another recent venture is "TRIO.inklusiv," which delivers 180 apartments across two buildings. The "Kammgarnhof Bad Vöslau" project is part of a research initiative aimed at achieving CO2 neutrality for 35 subsidized residences. Numerous awards underscore their impact: in 2025, einszueins received the World Habitat Award (Bronze), and in 2022, they were recognized by the New European Bauhaus Prize. Through these projects and accolades, einszueins Architektur has helped shape the discourse on collaborative and eco-conscious housing in Austria and beyond.
