Am Ostseeplatz eG is a Berlin-based housing cooperative managing around 630 apartments and 30 commercial units. Founded with the goal of providing secure, affordable housing, the cooperative combines social, ecological, and community-oriented concepts in its developments. Its properties are distributed across various Berlin districts, including notable sites in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, and Wedding. A prominent recent project is the Lynarstrasse development in Wedding, featuring a seven-story solid wood building with 98 residential units and seven commercial spaces. The project stands out for its sustainability—using timber construction—and its experimental approach to communal living, where entire floors are organized as “Residential Clusters” with shared and private spaces. The building also houses a dementia flat and various community rooms, strengthening the cooperative’s focus on diversity and social inclusion. Lynarstrasse has gained recognition through awards such as the Deutscher Holzbaupreis and Berliner Holzbaupreis in 2019 for sustainable urban housing. Historically, Am Ostseeplatz eG has prioritized tenant participation by making renters co-owners in the cooperative, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. Many properties offer space for businesses and social amenities—cafés, childcare centers, counseling services, and bike shops—reflecting a commitment to vibrant, mixed-use urban environments. The cooperative continues to expand, aiming to maintain and enhance the diversity of Berlin's housing landscape while adapting innovative housing models responsive to social and ecological needs.
