Arkitektbolaget

Arkitektbolaget is an architectural firm based in Växjö, Sweden, operating in the heart of southern Sweden. Founded as a small office, its staff has remained relatively compact over the years, with evidence pointing to around seven architects in its core team, yet it has played a notable role in regional urban development, particularly in the use of wood construction. Since its inception, Arkitektbolaget has worked across a diverse portfolio, including the design of schools, industrial sites, office buildings, housing, as well as urban planning assignments. The firm has become especially recognized for its focus on timber architecture in the Swedish context. Emerging as a specialist in wooden structures, Arkitektbolaget contributed to landmark projects during Sweden’s renewed interest in timber buildings following legal and regulatory changes that enabled multi-story wood-frame construction. One of its most prominent commissions is the *Limnologen* complex in Växjö, a set of four eight-story residential buildings made primarily from cross-laminated timber, comprising 134 apartments. Completed in 2009, Limnologen was regarded as a significant and pioneering achievement in modern Swedish timber construction and helped cement Växjö’s position as a hub for sustainable architecture. More recently, the *Strandsnäckan* project, completed in 2017, consists of 43 apartments with communal facilities overlooking Lake Växjö, distinguished by its adaptation to the landscape and focus on maximizing natural views. Beyond housing, Arkitektbolaget’s portfolio includes infill projects within Växjö’s grid plan and participation in competitive urban development initiatives. Driven by the local region’s ambitions and collaborations with municipalities, the practice continues to influence Växjö’s architectural identity with its enduring expertise in wood-based design.
