Co-operative Housing Ireland (CHI), headquartered in Dublin, has been a significant force in Ireland’s housing sector since its establishment in 1973. Originally known as NABCo, CHI was founded to support the emerging co-operative housing movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. Over the years, it has grown to become the country’s leading representative and provider of co-operative housing. CHI is designated as an Approved Housing Body and currently provides around 5,500 homes to low-income households. In addition to this, it has supported the delivery of approximately 3,000 affordable owner-occupier homes through various co-operatives. Its projects are developed in partnership with local authorities, government agencies, and private developers. Recent developments managed by CHI illustrate the scale and scope of its work. Notable examples include Kilruddery Glen in Bray, featuring 208 social-rented homes, and the 69-home Brookhill estate in Carrigaline, both delivered in partnership with government and local bodies. Another project, Moínear in Ennis, is home to 69 families and demonstrates CHI’s adoption of innovative construction methods, such as Insulated Concrete Forms. While CHI’s activity spans Ireland, its base and much of its work are centered in or near Dublin. The organisation has continued to expand its housing stock in response to demand and has been recognised within the sector for its impact, marking its 50th anniversary in 2023. CHI’s ongoing mission focuses on providing homes and supporting sustainable, member-led communities.
