Future Cooperative eG is a member-owned cooperative based in Munich, Germany, established in 2019 with the aim of fostering sustainable living through local communities and digital technologies. Originating from the Transition Town movement and first launched as a social enterprise in 2018, the organisation formally became a cooperative (Genossenschaft) to ensure full member participation and democratic decision-making. The cooperative is best known for developing Future Maps, an interactive platform and app that helps users discover sustainable restaurants, cafés, shops, and other tangible alternatives in their vicinity. Future Maps relies on its own independent, transparent “Future Rating” to evaluate the sustainability of listed locations, and the cooperative emphasizes independence by being fully owned by its members rather than external investors. Membership requires a one-time deposit of €10 and a monthly fee of €8 (or €4 at a reduced rate), granting members voting rights, the ability to attend annual meetings, and access to discounts from partner organisations. As of now, the cooperative’s activities are most active in Munich and Berlin. Besides mapping sustainable businesses, Future Cooperative eG supports local community building, organises events, and encourages members to participate in shaping its direction. The cooperative’s approach is explicitly community-driven, seeking to provide practical, user-centered tools without advertising or investor influence. All data is hosted within the EU, and the organisation places a strong emphasis on privacy and transparency in its operations.
