Plan Común is an architectural practice founded in 2012, originally in Chile, that has been operating from Paris since 2018. The office, located at 15 rue Martel in the 10th arrondissement, defines itself through a focus on public and collective spaces, employing straightforward architectural tools and a critical, research-driven approach. Its stated aim is to reinforce spaces that serve as platforms for collective use and imagination, prioritizing relevance and usefulness over spectacle. The organization’s leadership comprises Franco-Chilean partners, notably Nissim Haguenauer, who joined in 2018 and brings experience in major Parisian rehabilitation projects, and Marcelo Cox, who oversees the Chilean branch. Plan Común operates as a small, collaborative practice, working across design, research, and teaching. Among its recent projects is Maison Commune in Pantin, a self-initiated residential building with five units and expansive communal areas. The project emphasized autonomy in its design and financing, prioritizing shared spaces like a rooftop kitchen over maximizing private rentable area. This experiment in cohabitation serves as both manifesto and practical model for collective living. Another notable Paris-region project is the transformation of the Tour des Poissonniers into a student and arts residence. Here, Plan Común retained over 98% of the original building’s structure, adding community functions and integrating public space on site, exhibiting a restrained and resource-conscious method. Plan Común has participated in architectural exhibitions in France, Italy, and the United States, and continues to balance built work with theoretical and educational contributions. Its activities consistently prioritize the social function of architecture and a dialogue between inherited structures and new uses.
