Tu was für Europa is a non-profit, non-partisan association established in Berlin in early 2019. The organisation was formed as a reaction to rising anti-European sentiment in the run-up to the 2019 European elections, amid Brexit and growing nationalism across Europe. Its founding was spearheaded by Martin Schulz, former President of the European Parliament, alongside political figures such as Franziska Brantner, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, and Monika Grütters, and supported by a range of public personalities. The association's core objective is to motivate and empower individuals, groups, and institutions to visibly support the European idea, focusing less on EU institutions and more on the people who shape Europe's cultural and civic landscape. Tu was für Europa avoids making specific political demands or policy proposals, instead working to strengthen the shared pro-European consensus. Among its most prominent projects is EuroJam, an annual event in Berlin since 2022 that brings together diverse voices and audiences to celebrate Europe Day on May 9. The association also launched the #myeurope video campaign before the 2019 elections, involving well-known figures expressing their personal support for Europe. The "Voices of Europe Project" promotes linguistic and cultural diversity through multilingual choral performances, including appearances at the German Federal President’s Citizens’ Festival. Additionally, the Colours of Europe Award recognises exemplary European engagement in small municipalities, reinforcing the association’s focus on grassroots efforts. Tu was für Europa continues to operate as a civic facilitator, collaborating with partners to spark local and national involvement in building a united European community.
