Can 70 is a pioneering senior cooperative housing project in Barcelona, Spain, set to become the first of its kind on public land in Catalonia and the entire country. Initiated in 2015 by a group of individuals aged 55 to 70, the project aims to provide a supportive and self-managed living environment for active aging. The project is being developed under the umbrella of Sostre Cívic, a cooperative that promotes alternative housing models. In 2021, Barcelona City Council granted Can 70 a 99-year lease on two plots of land in the Sarrià neighborhood. The development will feature 39 homes, including 10 conventional units and 29 configured in aggregation units, along with shared spaces to foster community interaction. Can 70's model is based on collective ownership and the right to use, prioritizing housing as a good for use rather than a speculative asset. Members make an initial capital contribution and pay monthly installments based on the cooperative's costs, not market rates. The project emphasizes mutual support, shared collective spaces, and cooperative self-management of services. It aims to transform the predominant social model of elderly care by promoting an active and supportive lifestyle. Can 70 also focuses on creating an ecologically sustainable and healthy living environment. With construction set to begin soon, Can 70 represents a significant step towards innovative, community-driven housing solutions for seniors in Spain.
