De Nieuwe Meent is an innovative housing cooperative project located in Amsterdam-Oost, Netherlands. Initiated in 2018, it aims to create affordable, sustainable, and community-oriented housing based on the principles of commoning and collective ownership. The project comprises 40 social co-housing units, including 15 independent social units and 5 living groups, along with shared communal spaces. De Nieuwe Meent is designed as a seven-story wooden building with a focus on sustainability, featuring a circular load-bearing structure, solar panels, and energy-efficient systems. A key aspect of the project is its participatory approach, where future residents are involved in the co-development, co-design, and co-financing processes. This collaborative method allows for tailor-made living spaces that cater to the diverse needs of the community while fostering a strong sense of belonging. De Nieuwe Meent emphasizes affordability, with rents ranging from 450€ to 750€ per month. The project is financed through a combination of bank loans, personal contributions from members, and subsidies from various governmental bodies. As one of the pilot projects for housing cooperatives in Amsterdam, De Nieuwe Meent aims to inspire similar initiatives and contribute to the city's goal of creating more cooperative housing options. The project represents a new model of urban living that prioritizes community, sustainability, and social inclusivity.
