The Demo Hub, part of Budapest’s "Affordable Housing for All" (AHA) initiative, aims to tackle housing challenges through a novel, integrated approach. Located in Újpest, Budapest, the project repurposes a deteriorated 1970s vocational school into energy-efficient, affordable housing. Managed under the European Urban Initiative, the Demo Hub focuses on inclusivity, sustainability, and aesthetic design, aligning with the principles of the New European Bauhaus. As a pilot project, the Demo Hub exemplifies innovative solutions for urban challenges. It combines architectural redesign with energy-efficient systems to minimize costs for tenants and promote sustainable living. The initiative also incorporates collaborative design processes, allowing community input to shape the housing's development. Beyond housing, the AHA project supports residents at risk of homelessness or energy poverty with social services, rental arrears early warning mechanisms, and experimental housing models. The Demo Hub is funded primarily by the European Regional Development Fund, receiving half of the AHA project’s €5 million budget. It serves not only as a testbed for Budapest’s Housing Agency but also as part of a larger effort to rebuild trust in the public housing system. By repurposing municipal buildings and promoting innovative living arrangements, the project aims to create scalable, socially inclusive housing models for other European cities facing similar crises. This project demonstrates how bold experimentation in affordable housing can address critical urban, social, and environmental challenges.
