The Gröninger Hof project in Hamburg is a pioneering initiative that transforms an abandoned multi-storey car park into a vibrant space for living, working, and culture. Initiated by the Gröninger Hof cooperative, founded in 2018, the project aims to create affordable housing and commercial spaces in the city center. The eight-storey car park from the 1960s will be converted into over 80 state-funded rental flats, with a mix of retained and newly constructed wooden storeys. The building will feature a communal roof terrace with a tree garden and an inner courtyard that provides ample light. The lower levels will be open to the neighborhood and visitors, hosting cultural and educational activities, small businesses, and co-working spaces. The project focuses on sustainable construction, reusing the existing structure and recycling construction waste, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and climate protection. This cooperative model promotes community engagement and could set a precedent for innovative urban development.
