Las Carolinas is an innovative cohousing project located in the Usera district of Madrid, Spain. Developed by the Entrepatios housing cooperative, it represents a pioneering model of sustainable and community-oriented living in the city. Completed in 2020, Las Carolinas consists of 17 homes and shared spaces, accommodating approximately 50 residents, including both adults and children. The building is designed with a strong focus on environmental sustainability, featuring energy-efficient systems, renewable energy sources, and eco-friendly materials. It operates on a zero-carbon emissions principle and incorporates rainwater harvesting and recycling systems. What sets Las Carolinas apart is its unique ownership model. Residents are members of the Entrepatios cooperative, which owns the building. They pay an initial investment and monthly fees for the right to use their apartments, fostering a sense of community ownership without individual property speculation. The project emphasizes communal living and shared resources. About 15% of the building is dedicated to common areas, including a courtyard, children's play area, laundry facilities, and a rooftop terrace. These spaces encourage social interaction and mutual support among residents. Las Carolinas has gained recognition for its innovative approach to urban living, combining ecological sustainability with social cohesion. It serves as a model for future housing developments that prioritize community well-being and environmental responsibility.
