SchloR (Schöner leben) is a self-managed housing project in Vienna, Austria, that combines art, culture, workshops, and residential spaces. Founded in 2015, the project aims to create affordable, solidary, and collective living and working spaces outside of traditional real estate speculation. In 2019, SchloR acquired a 3,100m² property in Vienna-Simmering, formerly a large carpentry workshop. The project consists of three main components: residential units (SchloR), creative spaces (Creatives@Rappachgasse or CRAP), and a training center for contemporary circus and other physical arts (TRAP). SchloR is part of the habiTAT network, the Austrian branch of the Mietshäuser Syndikat, which supports collective housing projects. The community emphasizes solidarity, self-governance, and sustainable living. Their motto, "Better 1,000 friends at your back than a bank at your neck," reflects their approach to financing through direct loans and community support. The project offers various spaces for creative and community use, including seminar rooms, event spaces, workshops, rehearsal rooms, studios, and a 500m² training hall. SchloR aims to strengthen and promote culture, political exchange, and creativity in Vienna-Simmering and beyond, while providing affordable housing options for its residents.
