**Schoonschip: A Sustainable Floating Neighborhood in Amsterdam** Schoonschip is a pioneering floating neighborhood in Amsterdam, Netherlands, designed to address the challenges of urban density and rising sea levels. Located in the Johan van Hasseltkanaal, it consists of 46 sustainable homes across 30 water plots, housing over 100 residents. The project, initiated in 2010 by a group of enthusiasts, aims to create an energy-neutral community with decentralized and renewable solutions for water, energy, and waste systems. Each house is uniquely designed by different architecture practices, incorporating sustainable materials and technologies such as solar panels, heat exchangers, and water treatment systems. The neighborhood features a smart grid that allows residents to trade energy, and it strives to achieve local loop closure. Schoonschip serves as a prototype for floating urban developments, showcasing a circular community model that can be replicated to address global environmental challenges. The project is open source, with its knowledge and experiences shared online at https://schoonschipamsterdam.org/en/ to inspire and educate others.
