The W1555 housing project is located in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and is a unique example of circular transformation and community-driven development. The project began when a group of young artists squatted in the pre-war building in 2004, forming the NAC Foundation. Over time, the foundation worked with the property owner, Woonstad, to develop a recovery and management plan that included the renovation of the building into a housing cooperative. The renovation, led by Superuse Studios, transformed the building into 46 social housing units with communal and social spaces. The project prioritized sustainability, using circular and bio-based materials to minimize environmental impact. The design incorporated gallery flats, which addressed issues with the original balconies and improved daylight in the homes. The W1555 residents' association manages the complex, renting the apartments to its members and overseeing the communal facilities. The project emphasizes community and ecological awareness, aiming to provide affordable living and contribute positively to the neighborhood's cultural life. This innovative approach to housing development serves as a model for sustainable and community-driven projects.
