The Bundesstiftung Baukultur (Federal Foundation of Baukultur) is an independent German institution established in 2006 after receiving broad bipartisan approval in the German Bundestag. Its core mission is to advocate for the importance of architectural culture and make the built environment a shared concern throughout Germany. The foundation works to promote high-quality building design and construction on a political level while fostering discussion among various building professionals. Its scope extends beyond architecture to include engineering, urban design, and standards of good practice in planning and building—collectively known as "Baukultur." The foundation's most important medium is the biennial Baukultur Report, an official status report on planning and construction in Germany that serves as a political instrument. The latest edition, Baukultur Report 2024/25, focuses on "Infrastructures" and addresses the transformation needed for resilient, climate-friendly infrastructure. Previous reports have covered topics such as "Built Living Spaces," "City and Village," and "Heritage—Presence—Future." Partially funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and a friends' association with over 1,300 members, the Foundation operates with around 14 staff members. Rather than providing financial grants, it shapes public and professional discourse toward achieving higher quality in the built environment through publications, workshops, dialogues, and other events, ultimately contributing to Germany's quality of life in both urban and rural settings.
