Advances sustainable building practices through certification and education.
The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), headquartered in Stuttgart, was established in June 2007 by 16 initiators from the construction and real estate sectors. Its primary purpose is to advance sustainable building practices within Germany and internationally. The organisation operates as an independent, non-profit association and has grown to become Europe’s largest network for sustainable building. Today, DGNB counts over 2,500 member organisations, encompassing architects, planners, developers, product manufacturers, municipalities, universities, and financial sector representatives. This broad membership structure enables the DGNB to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge transfer across the building industry. One of DGNB’s key contributions is the development and management of the DGNB Certification System, launched in 2008. This system provides a comprehensive method for assessing, planning, and recognising sustainable buildings, interiors, and entire districts. More than 10,000 projects in approximately 30 countries have received DGNB certification, demonstrating the system’s international reach. Notable recent activities include the push for a nationwide building renovation initiative in Germany to meet climate targets, in coalition with architects, experts, and environmental organizations. The DGNB’s activities extend to education through the DGNB Academy, which trains professionals in sustainable construction, and the DGNB Navigator, a digital platform offering transparent data on building products. Around 500 experts contribute to committees guiding the DGNB’s work. The Stuttgart office serves as the organisation’s operational hub, coordinating certification, training, events, and international cooperation. The DGNB represents Germany in the World Green Building Council and partners with over 100 universities, furthering sustainable building education and advocacy.
