Connects stakeholders to transform rural properties into community spaces.
Netzwerk Zukunftsorte (NZO), founded in 2020 as Netzwerk Zukunftsorte e.V., works as a network and support structure for people and organizations involved in rural “third space” projects, particularly in Brandenburg. Initially, the group emerged from efforts to highlight creative spaces through the “Kreativorte Brandenburg” initiative. Over time, NZO formalized its mission: putting activists and stakeholders in touch to advocate the transformation of vacant rural properties into multipurpose community places. Its membership consists of a diverse mix—motivated individuals, associations, initiatives, social enterprises, real estate owners, and increasingly, local government authorities. They connect via regular online meetings, peer-to-peer learning, and in-person events such as the annual network gathering. Another format, “Tour De”, provides participants with a one-day introduction to rural regions and projects with transformation potential. Selection of projects is deliberate: NZO focuses on those who both live and work locally, combining residential life and public engagement. Priority is given to initiatives that regenerate vacant buildings to host activities accessible to everyone in the community. Support is also extended to emerging projects that have not yet reached this status. Activities include maintaining an online knowledge platform and offering consulting services to both public and private actors. The network is expanding these resources, aiming to provide tailored advice and expert connections through its growing database. Recent collaborations include the creation of the “Starke Orte Netzwerk” (Strong Spaces Network), which brings together local authorities to foster further rural innovation.
