Tackles climate change, nature loss, and social inequality.
Laudes Foundation is a philanthropic organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, established in 2020 by the Brenninkmeijer family, known for their longstanding legacy in European business and philanthropy. Its creation followed the closure of C&A Foundation, broadening its remit from fashion to also address challenges in the built environment and finance sectors. The foundation's mission revolves around tackling climate change, nature loss, and social inequality by influencing and partnering with industries to drive systemic transformation. Since its inception, Laudes Foundation has supported over 600 partnerships and initiated more than 140 new projects, with a grant portfolio totaling €220 million in 2021. The organization operates globally, relying on advocacy and coalition-building to change economic rules and encourage responsible business practices. A current example is Built by Nature, launched in 2021. This initiative aims to accelerate adoption of timber and bio-based materials in construction across Europe. By 2024, Built by Nature had supported over 100 organizations in 13 countries. The associated fund committed €5.75 million and secured €6.42 million in additional co-funding. These efforts expanded national networks, developed policy input for EU frameworks on carbon removals, and produced industry resources such as the Mass Timber Insurance Playbook. Laudes Foundation also launched platforms like Transparency in Action to guide fashion brands on supply chain disclosure and supports ongoing labour rights initiatives, especially in Brazil. The foundation’s approach is notable for integrating grants, research, policy engagement, and convening diverse partners to address interconnected environmental and social issues.
