Funds initiatives for justice, governance, and human rights globally.
The Open Society Foundations (OSF), founded by George Soros, is one of the world's largest private funders of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights. The organization operates globally, with a focus on supporting civil society, promoting democratic practice, and advancing human rights. OSF's key areas include democratic practice, equity in governance, future worlds, and rights and dignity. They provide grants to organizations and individuals aligned with their mission, engage in advocacy, conduct impact investing, and support strategic litigation. The foundation's annual budget is substantial, reaching $1.2 billion in 2020. Grants can range from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars, with the majority going to organizations approached directly by OSF. They aim to provide no more than one-third of any organization's budget. Recent initiatives include a $20 million grant to the International Crisis Group in 2022 to analyze global issues fueling violence and inequality, and a $10 million emergency fund for Afghan civilians in 2021. OSF also pledged €100 million in 2023 to support the launch of a new, independent foundation for Europe's Roma communities. To receive funding, organizations should align with OSF's values and demonstrate potential for lasting social change. However, most grants are awarded to groups OSF approaches directly, with limited open opportunities available.
