UmweltBank AG, headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany, is a private financial institution specializing in the financing of environmental projects. Founded in 1997, the bank has established itself with a distinct ecological focus and operates exclusively as a direct bank without a branch network. UmweltBank’s business model centers on providing financial products—such as savings accounts, green funds, loans, and insurance—geared exclusively towards projects with credible environmental benefits. Over its history, UmweltBank has financed nearly 25,000 environmental projects, with a notable concentration in renewable energy (particularly solar and wind), as well as in sustainable real estate development. By the end of 2022, the bank reported total assets of six billion euros. Its environmental loan portfolio, which includes commitments, reached 3.9 billion euros at the end of 2021. The majority of these loans support photovoltaic systems, residential real estate, and wind power projects.
