Architects for Future is a non-profit, voluntary movement founded in Germany in 2019 by a group of architecture graduates frustrated with the unsustainable practices in the building sector. The organisation stands in solidarity with the Fridays for Future movement and is committed to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement’s goals, with a clear focus on limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. It has grown into a network of around 2,000 active members, organised into approximately 40 local groups across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and has links with other European initiatives. The network’s mission is the holistic and sustainable transformation of the construction industry, which is responsible for about 40% of global carbon emissions. Architects for Future emphasises critically questioning demolition, favouring the preservation and adaptive reuse of buildings. When new construction is necessary, the movement promotes the use of healthy, climate-friendly, and circular materials. Their advocacy also includes the preservation of biodiversity and the promotion of social and ecological responsibility at all levels of planning and construction. Architects for Future operates independently, democratically, and in a non-partisan manner. Activities range from public advocacy, petitions, and educational events to forming trans-regional project groups. The organisation works to connect professionals, the construction industry, and society at large, building knowledge and fostering collaborative solutions for a sustainable built environment. Through their efforts, they aim to initiate a far-reaching cultural shift toward responsible, climate-neutral architecture and urban development.
