Unites and supports global cooperative and mutual housing initiatives.
Cooperative Housing International (CHI) is a sectoral organization of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) with a mission to unite, represent, and lead the international movement for cooperative and mutual self-help housing. Established as one of eight sectoral bodies within ICA, CHI does not build housing itself. Instead, it acts as a global network hub—showcasing cooperative housing successes, sharing resources, and connecting members to technical expertise and best practices worldwide. CHI’s origins lie within the larger cooperative movement, which dates back to the 19th century. Housing co-ops began emerging at that time in Europe, growing out of a need for affordable, secure housing controlled by residents rather than for-profit landlords. Today, CHI supports and amplifies the activities of thousands of housing cooperatives globally, acting as the most representative international network for co-housing in terms of member organizations and geographic reach. The work of CHI includes organizing panel discussions and symposiums, producing publications, and providing a comprehensive online resource library on governance, funding, and practical tools for cooperative housing. The organization’s board meets quarterly, supported by a staff team that aligns with ICA’s strategic direction. By collaborating with initiatives like the CoHabitat Network, CHI is able to link its own members to broader collaborative housing projects and document innovations ranging from student living models in the Netherlands to inclusive projects for people with disabilities in Spain and Brazil. Through these activities, CHI ensures cooperative housing remains responsive to changing social needs and local contexts.
