Promotes dialogue and solutions for Europe's challenges.
The European Forum Alpbach (EFA) is an Austrian nonprofit organization and foundation established in 1945 by Otto Molden and Simon Moser. Its origins lie in the immediate aftermath of World War II, when the founders convened the first "International College Weeks" in the village of Alpbach, Tyrol. Their core motivation was to foster dialogue among Europeans—particularly younger generations—with the aim of advancing democracy, peace, and intellectual renewal in the war-torn continent. Held annually each August, the main EFA event now attracts over 4,000 participants from more than 70 countries. The forum brings together scholars, policymakers, business leaders, and civil society actors, as well as artists and students, for a diverse two-week program. Discussions and activities are organized around thematic tracks, which in 2024 included climate, security, finance and economy, and democracy and the rule of law. The EFA's programme spans formal seminars for scholarship holders, interactive workshops, cultural exhibitions, and open discussions with prominent public figures. Historically, the forum has hosted influential thinkers and policymakers from across Europe and beyond. Since its inception, the EFA has been deeply connected to the European integration project, serving as a space for interdisciplinary reflection and action. Today, the organization maintains its headquarters in Vienna and continues to promote exchange around Europe’s most pressing social, political, and economic challenges, while also supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The current president is Othmar Karas.
