ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network that connects over 2,500 local and regional governments across more than 125 countries committed to sustainable urban development. Founded in 1990, it was originally called the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives before adopting its current name. The organization works to create systemic change in urban areas through five interconnected development pathways: zero emissions, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development. ICLEI provides technical consulting, tools, and resources to help local governments identify and meet sustainability objectives. ICLEI operates at multiple scales, building connections between local, regional, national, and global actors. The organization helps translate global frameworks to local contexts, ensuring community needs are considered in sustainability planning. It also advocates for robust national and global sustainability policies that reflect the interests of local governments. Through peer exchange, partnerships, and capacity building, ICLEI creates spaces for innovation and collaboration. The organization forms strategic alliances with international organizations, national governments, academic institutions, and the private sector to develop new approaches to sustainable development. ICLEI's work spans various activities including climate action, biodiversity conservation, and implementing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The organization has been recognized as the first and largest transnational network of local governments engaging in climate action.
