Metropolis is a global network of major cities and metropolitan areas that serves as a platform for metropolises to connect and share experiences. Founded in 1985 during the First Metropolis World Congress in Montreal with 14 founding members, the organization has evolved into a collaborative association dedicated to transforming cities toward more sustainable, equal, and resilient societies. The network elevates the collective voice of metropolises on the global stage while fostering worldwide cooperation, dialogue, and knowledge-sharing among urban centers. Metropolis operates as the metropolitan section of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) since 2004, strengthening its position in global urban governance. Throughout its history, Metropolis has developed various initiatives including the Metropolis Women International Network, the Metropolis International Training Institute (MITI), and the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. The organization approved a new action plan and statutes in 2015 at its 11th World Congress in Hyderabad. Metropolis works through a committed team and active participation from representatives of its membership. The association's collaborative approach brings together diverse metropolitan stakeholders to address urban challenges collectively. Its vision encompasses creating more sustainable, equal, and resilient urban societies through shared expertise and collective action.
