MitOst is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization headquartered in Berlin, Germany that was founded in 1996 by alumni of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and volunteer enthusiasts. It has grown into a diverse network with approximately 1,500 members across 49 countries in Europe and neighboring regions including Eastern Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The organization focuses on promoting cultural exchange, active citizenship, social cohesion, and sustainable urban and rural development beyond cultural, sectoral, and linguistic borders. MitOst empowers citizens to participate actively in their societies according to democratic principles through various tailor-made qualifications and support programs. MitOst implements several international programs and serves as a platform for social engagement and cross-sectoral cooperation. It provides both financial and professional support to members and alumni to bring their project ideas to life, including exhibitions, public campaigns, performances, workshops, and trainings. The association organizes the annual MitMission gathering (formerly known as the MitOst Festival), which brings together practitioners from civil society, arts, culture, social innovation, and the public sector around specific thematic focuses. This event provides an inclusive and participatory space for networking, knowledge transfer, and exchange of good practices. In July 2024, MitOst was declared an undesirable organization in Russia, marking a significant development in its history of operating in Europe's neighboring regions.
