The FOGO housing project in Zurich, Switzerland, is an innovative development that combines temporary accommodation for refugees with student housing, commercial spaces, and cultural activities. Located near the Altstetten train station, it offers affordable housing in a central location. The project was realized in 2018 and features 33 residential units ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 rooms and 67 to 102 square meters in size. The building's design emphasizes simplicity and material directness, with a saw-tooth vertical spruce planking exterior and industrial kitchen elements in the apartments. FOGO is a collaborative effort between the Asylum Organisation Zurich (AOZ), the Simple Living Foundation, and the Zurich-based youth housing network Juwo. It aims to facilitate coexistence among different communities, including refugees, students, and local residents. The project also includes spaces for businesses, cultural activities, and training venues, creating a dynamic and inclusive environment. FOGO has received recognition for its innovative approach to housing and integration, including the Distinction for Good Buildings in the City of Zurich in 2021.
