FOGO is an innovative housing project located in Zurich, Switzerland, near the Altstetten train station. Designed as a combination of refugee and student housing, it offers affordable accommodation in a central location. The project, completed in 2018, consists of 33 residential units ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 rooms, with sizes between 67 and 102 square meters. The building's architecture, created by HDPF, features a unique design that balances simplicity with subtle tectonic and compositional principles. The exterior is characterized by vertical spruce planking that extends outward with each floor, providing both structural protection and visual layering. Inside, the apartments offer a homely atmosphere with wooden surfaces and industrial kitchen elements. FOGO is part of a larger neighborhood development at Vulkanplatz, which aims to create a vibrant community. The project combines housing with innovative gastronomy, young businesses, educational opportunities, and cultural spaces. This mix of functions contributes to a lively and diverse urban environment. The FOGO project has been recognized for its architectural merit, receiving a distinction for Good Buildings in the City of Zurich in 2021. It represents a successful example of how temporary housing can be designed to meet high standards of quality and functionality while contributing to the urban fabric of the city.
