Haus der Statistik is an innovative urban development project located at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, Germany. This 40,000 square meter area, which stood vacant for a decade, is being transformed into a vibrant mixed-use space for art, culture, social activities, and affordable housing. The project, initiated in 2015, is a collaborative effort between the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, the district office Mitte, state-owned companies, and the ZUsammenKUNFT Berlin eG (ZKB) cooperative. It aims to create a model for sustainable urban development that integrates the needs of the local community, politics, and administration. The development plan includes administrative offices, a new town hall for Mitte, integrated living and working areas, and spaces for art, culture, and social activities. The project emphasizes community involvement through regular public participation and open planning sessions. Haus der Statistik is pioneering a circular economy approach in urban development, focusing on resource efficiency and sustainability. The project is set to be completed in phases, with some spaces becoming available as early as 2024, while others are expected to be ready by the end of 2025. This model project demonstrates how collaborative urban regeneration can create equitable, sustainable, and community-oriented spaces in the heart of a major city, setting a new standard for urban development in Berlin and beyond.
