Marmalade Lane is Cambridge's first cohousing development, located in Orchard Park. Completed in 2018, this innovative project comprises 42 homes, including a mix of 2 to 5 bedroom houses and 1 and 2 bedroom apartments. The development was designed by Mole Architects in collaboration with TOWN and Trivselhus, with significant input from the future residents. The project emphasizes community living and sustainability. It features extensive shared spaces, including gardens for growing food, play areas, and socializing spots. The centerpiece is the Common House, which contains communal facilities such as a kitchen, lounge, laundry, playroom, and guest bedrooms. These shared amenities foster a strong sense of community among residents. Marmalade Lane incorporates sustainable design principles, utilizing Trivselhus's Climate Shield closed panel timber frame system. This prefabricated system ensures high thermal efficiency and rapid on-site construction. The homes are equipped with triple-glazed windows, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and air source heat pumps for low-carbon electricity. The development caters to a diverse, multi-generational community, including families, retirees, and young professionals. Residents are members of K1 Cohousing and have a stake in the common areas. The project's success demonstrates the viability of cohousing as a model for future sustainable and community-oriented developments.
