Möckernkiez is an innovative housing project located in Berlin's Kreuzberg district, adjacent to Gleisdreieck Park. Initiated by a group of Berlin citizens, the project was developed as a cooperative for self-managed, social, and ecological living. The complex consists of 14 residential buildings with 471 apartments, built according to passive house standards and ecological criteria. Completed in 2018, Möckernkiez is now home to approximately 900 residents. The project emphasizes community living, sustainability, and accessibility, featuring a car-free environment and barrier-free design throughout. In addition to residential units, Möckernkiez incorporates various communal spaces and services, including studios, workshops, a hotel, youth center, organic market, medical facilities, and a daycare center. This mix of uses aims to create a vibrant, self-sufficient neighborhood. The cooperative structure allows residents to have a stake in their living environment. Members purchase shares and pay a one-time joining fee, which helps secure long-term affordable rents. The project also focuses on social cohesion, with the Möckernkiez association actively promoting community engagement and neighborhood activities. Möckernkiez stands out as a model for urban development, combining ecological sustainability, social integration, and cooperative living. It represents a citizen-led approach to addressing housing challenges in Berlin, offering an alternative to traditional real estate development models.
