MOOS is a pioneering housing and community project located near Treptower Park in southeast Berlin, occupying a historic 19th-century former bathtub factory. Since its founding in 2012 by Willem Klunder and Julia Wolfrum, MOOS has been transformed into a vibrant urban village and a hub for communal living, working, and experimentation. The site now hosts around 160 people, 20 small businesses, non-profit organizations, collectives, and a diverse range of initiatives, fostering a “community of communities.” The project features renovated industrial architecture alongside new eco-friendly structures, such as the Neubau (the new building) and the Halle (the hall), which accommodate residencies, studios, and events. MOOS emphasizes sustainable and modular construction, with flexible spaces designed for communal interaction and regenerative practices. Its communal areas, workshops, creative studios, and event spaces facilitate ongoing collaboration among residents, artists, social entrepreneurs, and urban experimenters. MOOS is also home to The Y Berlin, an incubator for regenerative economic concepts, community building, and systems transformation, reflecting MOOS’s commitment to social impact and grassroots innovation. The project’s ongoing evolution includes hosting cultural events, artist residencies, and workshops—demonstrating how post-industrial sites can be reimagined as catalysts for urban resilience, creative expression, and inclusive living in Berlin.
