New Ground is a pioneering cohousing project located in High Barnet, North London, UK. It is the country's first senior cohousing community, designed specifically for women over 50 years old. The development consists of 25 customized flats, including 17 owner-occupied and 8 socially rented units, centered around a shared 'co-house' and a large walled garden. Developed by Hanover Housing Association and designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects, New Ground aims to combat isolation and promote independent living among older women. The project features a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, each with its own balcony or patio. Shared facilities include a common house with a kitchen, dining areas, laundry, and a guest room, fostering a strong sense of community. The residents, ranging in age from their early 50s to late 80s, were actively involved in the design process, ensuring the development met their needs and preferences. This collaborative approach has resulted in a unique living environment that balances privacy with communal living, promoting social interaction and mutual support among residents. New Ground has received numerous accolades for its innovative approach to senior housing, including the Building Award 2017 for Small Housing Project of the Year and the European Collaborative Housing Award 2017. The project serves as an inspiring example of how older adults might live in cities, offering a potential solution to the challenges of an aging population.
