The R50 cohousing project in Berlin, Germany, is a joint building venture that embodies a new model for affordable and collective living. Located in the Kreuzberg neighborhood, the six-story detached building comprises 19 apartments, a studio, and various shared spaces. The project was initiated by architects through a concept-based bidding process and implemented in close cooperation with clients. The design emphasizes flexibility and adaptability, with a reinforced concrete structure, modular timber facade, and all-around balconies. The building integrates into the surrounding post-war residential neighborhood and features a double-height community space, laundry, workshop, and roof terrace. The project's innovative character lies in its inclusive approach to urban co-living and participatory planning process, which allowed for extensive resident participation and self-directed design. This approach resulted in a sustainable and beautiful building that offers a maximum capacity for adaptation and flexibility throughout its lifetime.
