Vindmøllebakken is a co-housing project located in Stavanger, Norway, designed by Helen & Hard architects and developed in collaboration with Kruse Smith real estate. The project comprises 40 co-living units, 4 townhouses, and 10 apartments, built using prefabricated timber elements. It is based on the "Gaining by Sharing" model, which emphasizes sharing resources to create a more sustainable way of living environmentally, socially, economically, and architecturally. The project features 500 square meters of shared space, including a communal kitchen, dining area, workshops, guest rooms, and a lounge. Residents were involved in the planning and development process through workshops, allowing them to influence the design and suggest activities for the shared spaces. This approach has led to the formation of various interest groups, such as kitchen, gardening, and car-sharing groups, which help manage the shared facilities and foster a sense of community. The project has received recognition for its innovative approach to housing, including the Innovation Award for Universal Design from DOGA – Design and Architecture Norway. It serves as a model for sustainable and socially conscious housing development, promoting a sense of community and shared responsibility among its residents.
