Fondazione Cariplo is an Italian philanthropic foundation established in 1991 in Milan. It focuses on four main areas: Environment, Arts & Culture, Scientific Research, and Social & Human Services. The foundation supports projects in these areas with the aim of promoting economic development and innovation. It assigns free grants for the realization of social issue projects on an international level, with a particular focus on the Lombardy region. In terms of financial resources, Fondazione Cariplo is one of the largest foundations in Italy. It has supported numerous projects over the years, including initiatives in environmental conservation, cultural development, and scientific research. For instance, under the AGER program, it has funded 32 projects since 2008 to promote sustainable technologies in the agri-food sector. For European projects, the foundation typically co-finances between 4 and 6 projects annually, with an average size of €3 million to €6 million. The co-financing provided by Fondazione Cariplo does not exceed 5% of the total project costs. Recent projects include those under the LIFE, DEAR, and Erasmus programs, with a total cost of about €107 million and a European contribution of about €64 million.
