The Lynarstrasse housing project in Berlin's Wedding district is an innovative residential complex developed by the housing cooperative "Am Ostseeplatz." Completed in 2019, this seven-story building consists of three interconnected sections, offering nearly 100 apartments for diverse community living. The project stands out for its unique construction, being almost entirely built from wood. This approach allowed for a rapid construction time of just over a year and significantly reduced the building's ecological footprint compared to conventional structures. The use of prefabricated wooden components enabled efficient assembly, with one floor completed per week during the shell construction phase. Lynarstrasse embraces a concept of communal living, featuring apartment clusters on each floor. These clusters combine private living spaces with shared areas like kitchens, living rooms, balconies, or terraces, fostering a sense of community among residents. The project houses a mix of residents, including people with and without disabilities, those from diverse backgrounds, and individuals with varying levels of care needs. The ground floor accommodates social facilities, including a kitchen and night café for homeless assistance, a social service station, a dementia shared apartment, a multilingual daycare center, and offices for an international street newspaper. This project has garnered several awards, including the 2019 Berlin Wood Construction Prize and recognition in the 2019 German Wood Construction Prize, highlighting its innovative approach to urban housing and sustainable construction.
